Class Description
Knowledge of human genetics and genetic variation has expanded rapidly over the last decade due to advances in sequencing technologies and the steady march of human genetic research. Genetic testing now plays a role in solving crimes, confirming family relationships, learning about your ethnic heritage, helping your doctor decide what prescriptions would work best for you, and even preventing disease. Learn all about genetics with this community oriented Modern Human Genetics series. Each workshop will give registrants a chance to participate in hands-on, educational experiences related to topics in genetics, and inform individuals about the impact of human genetics on a broad array of fields, including healthcare, information technology, marketing, and business. The mini series is intended to raise awareness of the value of genetics in personalizing medicine for individuals with all levels of familiarity to genetics

Important Class Notes
We all have a family history of some medial condition. In many situations, family history o a medical condition can be attributed to differences in family members' DNA. Information on DNA changes linked to disease has expanded rapidly over the last decade due to human genetics research. Despite this progress, a diagnosis often requires careful accumulation of a family's medical history and texting of multiple affected and unaffected family members. Learning from PreventionGenetics staff, registrants will explore the basic principles of human genetics, the power of genetic testing and how long-term storage of DNA samples (also known as DNA Banking) benefits family members for generations to come. Participants will also gain tools necessary to begin recording their family's medical history and have the opportunity to extract DNA from a hands-on experiment.
